John, born in Chicago, Illinois, has been a McHenry County resident for over 30 years. He has raised two daughters Annie, a former member of the United States military and Lisa, a photography student in Seattle - with his wife of 35 years, Josie, and is the owner of Shur-Pak Inc., an onion re-packing and distribution company.
John began his political career as a McHenry County committeeman and was elected to the County Board in 1994, where he served on a number of committees, including Management Services, Law and Justice, Stormwater Management and as the first chairman of the county’s Human Resource committee. As chairman of the County’s Human Resource Committee, he often had to make difficult and, at times, unpopular decisions. These decisions ultimately resulted in the institution of policies and procedures that strengthened the county’s fiscal position and improved employee morale and productivity. Says John, “My ability to make these hard decisions brought me the support and respect of my constituents and elected officials, even when they have not always agreed with the decision.”
During this time, John also co-founded Communities Against Gangs (CAG) and introduced the Youth Peer Jury System to the County Board.
John currently serves as vice-chairman of the County Board and as liaison to the 2030 McHenry County Regional Planning Commission, prompting the Northwest Herald to name John as a top 10 leader for 2010 and calling his leadership “instrumental” in the successful completion of the county’s 2030 plan. John is also a member of the Chairman’s Advisory Forum and McHenry County’s representative to Chicago’s 2016 Olympic Bid Committee.
John’s commitment to his community extends beyond his role
on the County Board and he continues to give back through
volunteer efforts with the Woodstock Lion’s Club, McHenry
County Police Charities, Woodstock and Grafton Townships
Food Pantries, Communities Against Gangs, and many other
organizations. John is a member of the McHenry County Farm
Bureau, McHenry County Defenders and the Woodstock,
Crystal Lake and Huntley Chambers of Commerce. As a
supporter of veteran’s affairs, John has been involved with
various veteran-centric organizations, including Woodstock
VFW post 5040 and New Horizons, a transitional living facility
for homeless veterans.
John holds a degree in Political Science and Economics from
St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas.
